COVID-19 is still around — and it’s still affecting people’s travel plans. Travel insurance with COVID-19 coverage can help protect you whether you catch coronavirus before you leave home and need to cancel your trip, or you catch it while you’re away.
Not sure it’s worth it? If COVID-19 ruins your vacation before it’s even begun and you don’t have trip cancellation coverage, you could lose most of the money you’ve spent on your trip. If you get sick with coronavirus while you’re traveling and need treatment, it can be expensive — especially in other countries where your U.S. health insurance may not cover you.
At Travelex, our plans can provide benefits like trip cancellation and interruption, emergency medical expenses, and medical evacuation if you test positive for COVID-19 before you leave on your trip or while you’re on vacation.
Does Travelex travel insurance cover trip cancellation because of COVID-19?
Yes, our trip cancellation benefit can apply if you catch COVID-19 before you leave home. If you can’t go on your trip because you, someone you’re traveling with, your family member, or your business partner tests positive for coronavirus and needs medical care, we could reimburse the nonrefundable payments and deposits you paid for your trip.
Important: If you need to cancel your trip because of COVID-19, the illness must start before you leave and while your Travelex plan is active. Plus, you need to see a doctor and get a note saying you're too sick to travel. If it's a family member or business partner who's sick, their doctor must confirm that their condition is life-threatening or that they need your help for your trip cancellation coverage to apply.
What if I contract COVID-19 while I’m traveling?
If you catch COVID-19 on vacation and need medical care, we can reimburse you for unexpected medical, medical evacuation, trip interruption, or travel delay costs.
Here are some details on how our travel insurance with COVID-19 coverage can help you:
- Trip interruption: Provides coverage for the unused portion of your prepaid non-refundable expenses as well as any additional transportation expenses you may pay to return home or re-join your trip.
- Travel delay: If you’re delayed at least five consecutive hours (six hours for our Essential plan), our plans provide coverage for necessary expenses such as hotel and meals, if a physician orders you to pause travel or quarantine during your trip.
- Emergency medical expenses: Provides coverage for your doctor-ordered medical services, like ambulance services, medical tests, prescription medications, physician services, and hospital admission.
- Emergency evacuation: Provides coverage for your doctor-ordered medical evacuation, such as to a suitable hospital or to return home from the hospital.
Plus, with a Travelex plan you can reach our 24/7 travel assistance provider for help with medical and travel arrangements.
How can Travelex help me if I test positive for coronavirus while traveling?
If you’re experiencing COVID-19 symptoms and need to see a doctor, our travel assistance provider can refer you to a local medical facility. They can also help you understand your travel insurance benefits so you know what you may be eligible for.
For example, if you test positive for coronavirus during your trip, our 24/7 travel assistance team can help you extend your hotel stay, book alternate accommodations, make changes to your travel bookings, and much more.
Can I extend my policy coverage if I’m required to quarantine?
If you catch COVID-19 while traveling and need to quarantine, we can help. Your coverage will automatically extend to whichever date comes first: the date you return home or seven days after your scheduled return date. But don’t think you can extend your vacation once your quarantine period is over; you must return as soon as your quarantine period is over to receive the extension.
What doesn’t Travelex cover when it comes to coronavirus?
We can’t offer trip cancellation if you’re worried about contracting COVID-19 while traveling. Remember, we’ll only provide coverage if you test positive for the illness after your policy becomes effective and before departing.
Want to be able to cancel your trip if you decide you don’t want the risk of catching COVID-19 while you’re away? You may want to consider buying our Ultimate plan and including our cancel for any reason upgrade in your policy. It allows you to cancel your trip up to 48 hours before your scheduled departure and be reimbursed with up to 75% of your prepaid, nonrefundable trip costs (up to $7,500).
