Discover how our emergency medical and dental coverage can help you
Ready to unwind on your next getaway? Whether you’re cruising to the Caribbean, train hopping through Europe, or flying to an overwater bungalow in Bali, the right planning can help reduce the stress of an unexpected illness or injury.
With travel insurance for medical emergencies for your trip, you can chill out knowing you can have coverage for those "just in case" moments. Plus, with our international travel emergency medical insurance, you’ll be able to reach our travel assistance provider 24/7 for help with your illness or injury.
What is emergency medical travel insurance?
Travel insurance that includes medical coverage (and dental in some cases) can help ensure you’re not left with big bills to pay if you need emergency medical help. A visit to the doctor or hospital often comes at a high cost — especially if you’re in a different country.
At Travelex, we’re here to help you when you need it most. That’s why we include coverage for unexpected medical and dental costs in most of our plans, plus access to 24/7 assistance. If you travel with our emergency medical travel insurance, we can reimburse your unexpected doctor or hospital bills. This way, you won’t be footing the bill on your own long-term.
Why do I need emergency medical travel insurance?
Picture this: You're walking on the beach in the Bahamas when — ouch! — you step on a sharp shell and need to see a doctor. Or maybe you’re on a cruise and catch the stomach bug that’s going around, so you visit the onboard medical facilities. Along with figuring out how to get health care away from home, you’ll likely be paying for potentially costly medical bills.
Plus, if you’re in another country, your U.S. health insurance provider probably won’t cover your emergency medical costs. So, all the financial responsibility would fall on your shoulders — and your wallet.
Our international travel emergency medical insurance can have your back if something affects your health during your trip. But it’s not only costly bills we can help with — our 24/7 assistance provider can help you find medical facilities so you get the treatment you need, and even support with telehealth appointments or prescription services. Because when you travel with one of our Travelex plans, we want you to focus on getting well soon — and back to your vacation.
Does your travel insurance cover a medical emergency?
Yes, we have Travelex plans with emergency medical coverage, which means we can reimburse you for unexpected costs incurred on your trip, such as:
- Services of a physician or registered nurse
- Hospital charges
- Local ambulance services
- Prescription medication
- Therapeutic services
The amount of coverage we provide varies depending on the plan you choose, so keep reading to find out which of our plans include emergency medical coverage and the limits.
Worried about having to pay upfront just so you can receive treatment? If you have a Travelex policy, give our 24/7 assistance provider a call. We can sometimes pay in advance if there’s a charge for you to get medical care or hospital admission. This way, you don’t have to worry about scrambling funds together when you need it most.
Oh, and remember our coverage only applies to unexpected medical situations — not elective surgeries like cosmetic surgery. So, if you’re planning on having elective surgery while on vacation, we won’t be able to cover the costs of the operations or provide financial support if anything goes wrong during or after the surgery.
Which of your plans include emergency medical travel insurance?
At Travelex, we put your health and safety first — so most of our plans include emergency medical coverage.
Here’s the limit per person for emergency medical expenses for each of our plans that include this coverage:
- Essential: $25,000
- Advantage: $50,000
- Ultimate: $250,000*
- Travel Med Go: $50,000
- Flight Insure Plus: $10,000
*If you’re a New Hampshire resident, the benefit limit for emergency medical expenses on our Ultimate plan is $50,000.
Does travel insurance cover dental expenses?
Dental coverage is often included with medical coverage on a travel insurance policy, but it’s important to check what is and isn’t covered. This type of coverage is designed for emergency dental treatment — not elective dental procedures like teeth whitening or straightening — so make sure you read the policy conditions.
Our Travelex plans can provide travel insurance for dental treatment abroad. This coverage could come in handy if you fall and chip a tooth or need to visit a dentist for a sudden and severe toothache because we can reimburse your dental expenses.
Want a Travelex plan with dental coverage? If you purchase our Essential, Advantage, Ultimate, or Travel Med Go plans, you’ll have $500 emergency dental coverage to cover unexpected teeth-related incidents. With our Flight Insure Plus plan, your dental benefits are included with your $10,000 emergency medical benefit.
For more information on our travel insurance with dental coverage, you can get a quote and read the policy for each of our plans.
Do you cover pre-existing medical conditions?
Yes, we can. Whether you’re looking for emergency medical travel insurance for seniors that includes coverage for pre-existing conditions or you’re a little younger but want to make sure you have coverage for your health conditions, we can help.
Our Ultimate plan is our most comprehensive plan and comes with extra coverage — including pre-existing medical condition coverage. For coverage to apply, you need to buy our Ultimate plan within 21 days of your first trip payment, be medically fit to travel when you purchase your plan, and insure your total trip cost. If you do, we’ll waive the pre-existing medical condition exclusion that applies to our other plans.
So, if you’re worried your asthma or diabetes could give you trouble on vacation — or even prevent you from going on your trip — our Ultimate plan could be a good choice for you.
Can I buy additional emergency medical travel insurance?
When you choose to travel with one of our plans, yes. We have up to nine optional upgrades available (depending on which plan you choose), including our medical coverage upgrade. It’s available with our Ultimate and Travel Med Go plans and allows you to add an extra $250,000 to your total emergency medical travel insurance benefits.
With our medical upgrade, you’ll get this level of coverage:
- Ultimate: $250,000* base plan limit plus $250,000 upgrade limit = $500,000
- Travel Med Go: $50,000 base plan limit plus $250,000 upgrade limit = $300,000
*If you’re a New Hampshire resident, the medical upgrade is not available and the base plan benefit limit for emergency medical expenses on our Ultimate plan is $50,000.
