What does comprehensive travel insurance cover?

Our Ultimate plan does more than just help protect you from common travel hiccups. It can have your back if something goes wrong on your trip, like delays, cancellations, illnesses, or injuries. Its extra coverage with higher benefit limits and optional upgrades can give you extra confidence while traveling — especially if you’ve invested a lot in your vacation or are planning unique activities.

What else do you get with our best comprehensive travel insurance plan? Our Ultimate plan comes with support from our team of travel experts, available 24/7 via our Travel On app and assistance line.

How is Ultimate different from other comprehensive travel insurance plans?

And what does comprehensive travel insurance even mean? Comprehensive travel insurance gives you coverage before you leave home and while you’re traveling. This means you’re better protected even if you can’t go on your vacation.

Our Ultimate plan offers the same benefits as our other comprehensive plans, Advantage and Essential — plus much more. With Ultimate, you can insure a higher trip cost and longer trip length, meaning you can get more money back for certain eligible expenses.

Here are some benefits available only with our Ultimate plan, which make it our best comprehensive travel insurance:

  • •    Kids-included pricing: Ultimate's comprehensive travel insurance includes coverage for one child 17 or younger per each insured adult traveler, making it a great option for families (The child's trip cost must be the same or less than the adult's individual trip cost for coverage to apply. If you add upgrades to your policy, we'll charge each traveler for the upgrade premium.)
  • •    Trip inconvenience: If closed attractions, a closed beach, or cruise disablement interrupt your trip, you can receive a one-time payment up to $200.
  • •    Waiver of the pre-existing condition exclusion: Ultimate can include coverage for your pre-existing medical conditions in your policy. To get the waiver, buy our Ultimate plan within 21 days of your first trip payment and insure your total trip cost.
  • •    Nine optional upgrades: Exclusive to our Ultimate plan, you can choose to add our cancel for any reason, cancel for business reasons, and medical upgrades to your policy. Plus, we have six other upgrades available, so you can tailor your policy to the vacation you planned.

FAQs about our Ultimate comprehensive travel insurance plan

Can the Ultimate plan cover my international trip?

Yes, our Ultimate plan can provide international comprehensive travel insurance for your trip abroad – whether you’re going south of the border to Mexico or all the way to Australia.

It’s always worth considering coverage for international trips, because unforeseen expenses — like more expensive flight cancellations and medical care — can be more costly than domestic trips. Our Ultimate plan offers higher trip cost coverage and benefit limits than our other comprehensive travel insurance plans, making it a great plan for overseas trips.

Tip: Don’t forget to check that it’s safe to visit your chosen international destination by looking at the latest updates from the U.S. Department of State's travel advisories website.

Does the Ultimate plan include comprehensive cruise travel insurance coverage?

Yes, our Ultimate plan’s coverage applies to cruise trips, making it a great option for vacations at sea.

Still considering whether your cruise vacation is worth protecting? Onboard medical care and emergency evacuations from cruise ships can be pricey. But you can feel more protected during your vacation at sea if you board with our most comprehensive cruise travel insurance plan: Ultimate has our highest benefit limits for emergency medical expenses (up to $250,000) and emergency evacuation (up to $1,000,000).

Can I upgrade my current Travelex travel insurance plan to Ultimate?

If you need to change any details on your comprehensive travel insurance policy, you can reach our award-winning customer service department at 1-800-228-9792, Monday-Friday, 8:00 a.m. to 7:00 p.m. CST. They’ll be happy to help you get the best coverage for your vacation plans.

Is there anything the Ultimate plan doesn’t cover?

Our plans help protect you from the unexpected. So, whatever goes wrong on your trip must happen after you’ve bought your policy and must be an eligible event. For example, we can’t provide coverage for a hurricane if it was named or announced before you purchased our Ultimate plan — because that makes it an expected event.

To find out what our Ultimate plan does and doesn’t cover, check out the description of coverage wording. You can access it online when you get a quote, or if you’ve already purchased this plan, check your Confirmation of Coverage email for details.
