Keep your furry friends — and finances — happy and healthy during your trip
Are you a dog or cat parent and planning your next cruise to the Caribbean, escapade throughout Europe, or road trip across the U.S? Whether you’re planning to leave your beloved pets at home or take them along for a pet vacation of their own, good news: we have pet travel insurance for them, too.
At Travelex, we know your pets are part of your family — and their safety and wellbeing matter just as much when you’re traveling. We also want you to focus on enjoying your escape rather than worrying about paying for unexpected additions to your pet’s care.
So, pack our travelers’ pet insurance if you’re bringing your dog or cat along on a pet-friendly vacation or boarding them at home. Our coverage can help ease any worries about veterinarian costs if something goes wrong while traveling or you can’t make it home as planned.

What’s pet travel insurance?
Pet travel can be delightful, but it also comes with unique challenges. What if your pet’s health takes a sudden turn during the trip? Or what if your flight is delayed and your furry friend’s accommodations fall through?
International pet insurance can offer a safety net for these scenarios, helping to offer coverage for unexpected costs related to your pet’s well-being and boarding. It’s designed to keep your pet comfortable, healthy, and secure if something goes wrong while you’re away.
What does Travelex’s pet travel insurance cover?
We’re here to help care for your cats and dogs whether they’re going on a pet vacation with you or staying at home in a boarding kennel while you explore the world.
You can get travelers’ pet insurance through our pet care upgrade, which is available on our Ultimate, Advantage, Essential, and Travel Med Go plans.
Our pet care upgrade can help in two ways:
1. If your pet isn’t traveling with you: Should your trip be delayed for an eligible reason and you end up with extra pet boarding fees, we can offer up to $250 coverage for your necessary extra boarding costs at a licensed commercial kennel up to three days past your original return date.
2. If your pet is traveling with you: Looking for medical travel insurance for cats and dogs? If your animal companion has an eligible sickness or injury, we can offer up to $2,500 coverage for emergency veterinarian expenses.
What doesn’t Travelex’s pet travel insurance cover?
Firstly, we’re sorry to all the much-loved pet rabbits, horses, guinea pigs, hamsters, fish, and turtles out there, but our pet care upgrade only offers coverage for cats and dogs. So, if you have a pet that isn’t a cat or dog, we can’t help.
Secondly, because our pet care upgrade offers coverage for two different types of expenses (medical and boarding), there are different eligibility requirements for each.
If your pet isn’t traveling with you
Our coverage for additional boarding fees only applies if you have a travel delay resulting from a natural disaster, you’re admitted to the hospital, or other eligible reasons (which you can find in your plan’s description of coverage), and you boarded your animal at a licensed commercial kennel while on your trip.
So, if you simply decide to extend your trip for fun and pay for extra days to board your dog or cat, we won’t provide coverage for those costs. Or, if you’re paying your friend to watch your animal at home, we can’t reimburse you for extra days.
If your pet is traveling with you
For pet veterinarian expenses to be eligible for reimbursement, your pet’s sickness or injury must be one that you didn’t anticipate and that first manifests itself or occurs during your pet-friendly vacation.
So, if you’re looking for pet travel insurance that covers pre-existing conditions, know that our pet care upgrade only applies to new and unexpected health conditions. For example, if your dog has a pre-existing seizure condition and needs veterinarian care while on a pet vacation because of a seizure, we won’t provide coverage for your pet’s medical costs.
Any pet veterinarian expenses you incur on your trip also need to be recommended by a licensed veterinarian as reasonable and necessary, including services and supplies. This means the treatment can’t wait until you’re back home because the unexpected and accidental injury or illness is impairing your animal’s normal functions. Our medical travel insurance for cats and dogs won’t apply if the veterinarian treating your pet is you, your traveling companion, or your family member (even if you’re a licensed veterinarian).
Does Travelex’s pet travel insurance cover service dogs?
Yes — our pet care upgrade offers coverage for all types of dogs and cats for the eligible reasons listed in the description of coverage. Whether or not your pet is a service animal (or support animal) doesn’t change your eligibility for coverage or benefits under the upgrade. We’re here to offer care for both of you!
