Protect your trip with accidental death and dismemberment travel insurance
It’s exciting to plan an upcoming trip; you get to decide where you’re staying, what activities to try, and what new places you’ll see. But while holding onto that excitement, it’s also smart to plan for unexpected things that could go wrong — like a serious accident.
Although severe injuries are rare, they can be costly — especially if they happen while you’re in another country. But with accidental death and dismemberment travel insurance (or AD&D as some travelers call it), you can focus more on enjoying your trip and less on how you or your loved ones would cover the unexpected costs.
Plus, our plans include our exposure and disappearance coverage, which can cover more specific losses of life or limbs in different scenarios.
Read on to learn more about our accident travel insurance benefits: accidental death, accidental dismemberment, and exposure and disappearance coverage.
What’s accidental death travel insurance?
We never know when something could go wrong on vacation, so it’s smart to be prepared. Travel accidental death insurance helps to cover the unexpected costs if the worst possible trip mishap occurs: the loss of your life or someone else on your policy who’s traveling with you.
How can our accidental death travel insurance help you or your loved ones during this horrific time? The beneficiary (the person chosen to receive payment if you or someone else on your policy pass away) can grieve without paying for funeral and other costs completely out of pocket. If anyone included in your policy passes away from an eligible accidental injury during your trip, we can pay the beneficiary the amount listed for accidental death travel insurance in your policy. This means our team can be there for the beneficiary when they need support.

What’s accidental dismemberment travel insurance?
Having a serious accident on vacation can change your life in many ways. But if you have accidental dismemberment coverage, financial relief can help make this unexpected journey easier.
When you travel with our accidental dismemberment coverage, if a vacation accident causes you or another traveler on your policy to lose a limb, sight, speech, or hearing, we can pay you up to the amount listed in your policy.
Wondering how payment works? What you receive depends on which plan you choose and what body part or function you lost unexpectedly on your trip.
Here’s the percentage of the maximum covered amount we can pay for specific losses:
- Both hands or both feet: 100%
- One hand and one foot: 100%
- One hand or one foot plus loss of sight in one eye: 100%
- Loss of sight in both eyes: 100%
- One hand, one foot, or loss of sight in one eye: 50%
- Speech and hearing: 100%
- Speech or hearing: 50%
If you have more than one loss during the trip from the same eligible accident, we can pay for the loss with the larger benefit.
What if you have a loss and doctors surgically reattach the limb? We can pay 50% of your accidental dismemberment benefit. If after 365 days the reattachment failed and you have a permanent loss of use of the limb, we can pay the rest of the coverage amount.
What’s exposure and disappearance coverage?
This type of coverage protects both you and anyone else insured on your policy from two accidental scenarios: exposure to weather that causes harm and disappearance while on transportation.
Our exposure and disappearance coverage can help you in two ways:
- If you have an accident on vacation, you could be exposed to weather that results in a loss that’s eligible for coverage. For example, if you’re unexpectedly stuck without shelter in below-freezing temperatures, you could lose a limb because of frostbite.
- If your transportation (like an airplane or ship) disappears, is wrecked, or sinks and you’re not found within 365 days, your loved ones may need financial support to help with your loss.
With our exposure and disappearance benefit, we can pay you or your beneficiary the amount listed in your policy if you’re involved in an eligible scenario.
Why should I buy accidental death and dismemberment travel insurance?
Hopefully, you’ll never have to use this coverage — but it can help you feel more at ease if you know you have some financial protection from unexpected accidents. Plus, serious travel accidents can have a major impact on your life and those of your loved ones. Knowing you or your beneficiary can have help with the sudden costs can provide some relief during a challenging time.
When could our travel insurance with accidental death and dismemberment coverage be especially helpful? Whether you’re on a flight, snorkeling in a coral reef, or sightseeing on historic streets — or even something riskier like skiing in Switzerland or bungee jumping in New Zealand — our coverage can help financially if something goes very wrong.
Good to know: Our base plans don’t cover all adventure activities. If you’re planning on doing certain activities our base plans exclude, like skydiving and skiing, you can protect yourself by adding our adventure activities upgrade to your Essential, Advantage, Ultimate, or Travel Med Go plan.
Which Travelex plans include accident coverage?
We have four plans that offer accident coverage for your trip. Each plan has a different level of coverage per person, so you can choose which one works best for you:
- Essential: $10,000
- Advantage: $20,000
- Ultimate: $25,000
- Travel Med Go: $10,000
Important: Our plans only provide coverage for one “accident” loss. This means the coverage limit is the same for each accident benefit — accidental death, accidental dismemberment, and exposure and disappearance — and you can receive up to this limit once for an eligible accident.
