See why getting missed connection coverage is a smart choice
Not every destination can be reached with a direct flight or cruise. Connections help us travel further, allowing us to explore more parts of the world. But connections aren’t always perfect; sometimes they’ll depart before you board.
If you’re delayed and miss a connection, your trip will be put on pause — and you may have to fork out for unexpected extra costs while you wait for a new flight or catch up with your cruise.
Whether you need to buy things like meals or an extra night in a hotel room because you didn’t make your next flight or cruise, our travel insurance with missed connection coverage can help reimburse you. This means you can feel some relief even if your vacation is temporarily on hold.
What is travel insurance with missed connection coverage?
Missed connection travel insurance can reimburse your necessary expenses and unused prepaid travel arrangements — like nonrefundable tours and transportation to your destination — if you have a missed connection.
We offer missed connection coverage for flights and cruises because there’s always a chance you could miss a connection for reasons out of your control. Maybe your first plane is delayed because of mechanical problems and you take off three hours later than expected. Or perhaps bad weather causes a cancellation resulting in you missing the first leg of your cruise. Both of those travel mishaps could mean you miss your next flight or your cruise departure.
What do you do if you miss your connecting flight or cruise? While you wait for the next airplane or ship to your destination, you’ll likely need food, water, and even a place to stay if there’s no transportation for a while. That’s where your travel insurance with missed connection coverage comes in. It can help cover the unexpected extra costs you encounter while you’re trying to sort out how to get your trip back on track. If you’re traveling with us, you can even call our 24/7 travel assistance provider for support.
Does Travelex travel insurance cover missed flights and cruises?
Yes. We offer travel insurance with missed connection coverage on our Essential, Advantage, Ultimate, Travel Med Go, and Flight Insure Plus plans. Our coverage only applies to missed connecting flights and cruises (not trains or other forms of transportation).
Here’s the maximum amount per person we can reimburse with each plan for eligible expenses because of a missed connection:
- Essential: $150
- Advantage: $500
- Ultimate: $750
- Travel Med Go: $300
- Flight Insure Plus: $50
Wondering what counts as an eligible expense? We can reimburse your reasonable lodging arrangements, meal expenses, and the unused portion of your travel arrangements up to your plan’s maximum eligible amount. But we can only reimburse you if you miss your connection because:
- You were in a documented traffic accident on your way to the location where your flight or cruise departed.
- Your airline canceled or delayed your flight for three hours or more because of mechanical breakdown or adverse weather.
What’s not eligible for coverage with Travelex’s travel insurance for missed connections?
We can help make your wait easier if you miss your flight or cruise connection by helping you afford unexpected costs that come up — but not all costs.
Here are some examples of expenses and situations we won’t provide coverage for:
- You book a multi-night stay in a fancy hotel when there’s a flight you can take the next morning after your missed connection. We can cover reasonable lodging arrangements — meaning a one-night stay in this case — not stays for nights that aren’t required. Plus, we can only cover up to the limit your plan includes – so think twice because booking a fancy hotel or eating an even fancier meal if it’s more than coverage limit or you’ll be out of pocket.
- You miss your connection because you slept in late or your flight had a one-hour delay. We can only cover your missed connection if it’s because of a traffic accident en route to the airport or your airline canceled or delayed your flight for three hours or more because of mechanical breakdown or severe weather.
